The Beauty Adventure or the Amber and Fashion Gala Amberif 2007

This year’s Amber and Fashion Gala promises to be exceptionally interesting. The Gala’s organisers have invited leading fashion and jewellery designers; many of them will make their first-time appearance. All of them are working very hard to present a real feast for all the beauty connoisseurs.

1. CAN YOU IMAGINE?

by Agnieszka Gruszka and Aleksander Gliwiński

Agnieszka Gruszka

She comes from Gdańsk and has been a designer for 3 years. Agnieszka has a unique ability to master the material. She often uses asymmetry and sharp cuts which reflect her character and strong personality attracted by new challenges and innovations. Her collections were presented in Gdańsk and Sopot and on the opening night of the Amber Museum in Gdańsk - AMBERMART 2006. Agnieszka’s designs have been presented in women’s magazines. Her designs are made to individual order. This is Agnieszka’s first appearance at the Amber and Fashion Gala

Aleksander Gliwiński

Has been designing and making jewellery collections for 19 years, in keeping with his family tradition. Amber has taken over his entire life by becoming his muse, inspiration and the whole world. He gave himself to jewellery with abandon. Polish Indian Summer, The Cascades, Asymetrix are Aleksander’s best known collections and are unambiguously associated with their designer. His projects are recognised and highly valued throughout the world. Humble towards the power of nature to begin with, Gliwiński learned in time to impose his own ingenious ideas on amber.

The Collection: They were united by their shared passion for design. They fought a constructive battle anointed with emotions and efforts to create a joint piece of work: a feminine collection with sharp and distinct cuts, inspired by the Renaissance ruff. We can expect a startling spectacle of pleats, folds and implicit statements enclosed in a sharp and refined collection in the shades of purple, brown and green. For her designs, Gruszka used wool, organza, shantung and tulle. She combined these materials in an unconventional way by using asymmetry, sharp cuts and three-dimensionality as her form of expression.

2. STEEL TRANSFIGURATIONS

by Partycja Smirnow & Ewa Morka and Paweł Kaczyńki

Partycja Smirnow & Ewa Morka

A designer duo from Warsaw, have been working together for 5 years. They met at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Łódź, where they studied knit and knitwear design. In December 2005 Smirnow & Morka opened their first shop in Chmielna Street in Warsaw, where apart from their designer clothes you can buy accessories (jewellery, handbags, hats) by other designers. They are both bold, determined and persistent in reaching their goals by designing contemporary ready-to-wear fashion for the city woman.

The designers’ motto is the comfort of use, while their goal is to dress, not to dress up. In their style, we can find references to such Far East masters as Yamamoto or Kenzo.

Paweł Kaczyński

Has been designing jewellery for a dozen years or so, by experimenting with unusual jewellery techniques and materials. Fascinated with the fragile beauty of the world around us, Kaczyński attempts to transpose its fragments into the spatial forms of his jewellery.

His artistic search revolves around the use of various structures of metal as his only kind of jewellery medium in which he tries to break through the stereotype of limitations determined by the hard metal surface.

The Collection: The collection to be presented at the Amberif Gala has been inspired by natural shapes and colours of nature, leaves, trees and the earth. It has been created to emphasise the beauty, elegance and natural quality of Kaczyński’s jewellery shapes, without competing with it. Made of thin cotton knitwear complemented with transparent fabrics such as silk, in earth colours: from beige, through brownish greens to steel grey, finished with golden elements, the collection is sublime, calm and prêt-à-porter, full of implicit statements and designed for the city girl. We can expect dresses, skirts, sweaters with oval, soft and asymmetrical shapes to give the attire its expressive quality. The knitted fabrics used in the collection reflects perfectly the simplicity of nature. It is a perfect background for yet another stage of Kaczyński’s artistic search. In his collection’s visual message, silver, steel and amber was used.

This collection will be opening the show.

3. TECHNO NATURE

by Natasha Pavluchenko and Mariusz Gliwiński

Natasha Pavluchenko

Fashion designer originally from Belarus. Winner of prestigious awards: New Look Oscars 2005; Smirnoff International Fashion Award 2002 (Moscow); Russian Silhouette (Moscow). Winner of CPD Dusseldorf and White Amphora 2003 (Belarus). At present, she designs attire for the Golec uOrkestra pop band. She is also a stylist for Trendy hirfashion, and works for Dorota Wróblewska’s Forget-me-Not Fashion House. Natasha has been running her own fashion design studio in Bielsko-Biała for 3 years.

It will be her first appearance at the Gala.

Mariusz Gliwiński

Renowned and appreciated jewellery designer. He comes from the Tri-City and has been designing jewellery in his own Ambermoda company since the end of the 1970s. He has been present at the Amber and Fashion Gala since 1999. Winner of many awards and distinctions. He took place in many international shows in Tucson and Los Angeles (USA), at JCK, and others. His designs stand out by the quality of workmanship and incessant self-improvement.

The Collection: This haute couture collection’s leitmotif is the combination of modern technology with nature. Women’s dresses were constructed along pure lines, multi-layer solutions and finishes to let the material fall in a natural way. Top quality hand-painted natural silk was used to make the attire, to evoke an association with wind, sand, the sun and nature. Every piece took 5-6 m of fabric in powder pink, ecru, delicate purple and watered-down turquoise. The collection targets demanding women, for special occasions. The collection is accompanied by specially designed stilettos. The jewellery is an intrinsic component of the attire. Unconventional materials were used to make it, e.g. printed circuit boards (!), with the processors replaced with amber and the rest complemented with silver. The boards are reminiscent of satellite pictures of big cities, where people move instead of the electrons. Thanks to the novel fastening solutions, they adjust to the figure as jewellery “modules.” We are in for a beautiful metaphysical collection, where nature and civilisation constantly go round full circle and influence each other.

4. FINE LINE

by Aleksandra Kus and Jacek Ostrowski

Aleksandra Kus

Graduate of the Sculpture Department, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Clothes design and sewing have become her passion. Aleksandra uses various techniques of artistic expression in her work, most of patchwork, which allows her to create light and amusing forms. The play of texture, shape and colour fascinates her. It this case the fun was in combining soft materials with rigid silver jewellery.

Jacek Ostrowski

Winner of the MERCURIUS GEDANENSIS medal in the Technical Innovation category at Amberif 2006 for his work entitled 4 Ways. He is studying at the Design Institute of the Koszalin University of Technology. The Collection which he will present is his graduation work in Prof. Bogumiła Jung’s Product Design Department. In his daily life, Jacek reconciles his studies with running a jewellery company where he designs and makes contemporary silver and amber jewellery. He is inspired by the simplicity and geometry of the form which he uses in his designs.

The Collection: This year’s gala will see the first appearance by both artists. They will present ascetic women’s dress with the novel application of patchwork. This will be an elegant and avant-garde collection for the bold woman: combined with the jewellery, simple and geometrical in form. It has been made of diverse materials, such as corduroy, canvas, knitted fabric, or even seersucker in black, grey and white. The clothes go together with jewellery inspired by this fashion line, made of amber and finished with polished silver to show the inspiration and new direction in design: the close combination of the jewellery with the attire.

It seems that latest-in-fashion fans are in for a treat.

5. MODERNISED MIDDLE AGES

by Bożena Wysocka and Małgorzata Kupiec

Bożena Wysocka

Versatile artist from Karpacz. Bożena has done many fashion shows already, but it will be her first at the Amber and Fashion Gala. Although she comes from the highland part of Poland, she has been fascinated by amber for years. In her own words, she doesn’t like the plains, only the mountains and the sea. Besides being a fashion designer, Bożena also runs a model agency in Jelenia Góra.

Małgorzata Kupiec

Małgorzata and Wacław Kupiec have been running their original Studio Forma which designs and manufactures applied art to order, with main focus on jewellery. The jewellery and other jewellery forms are completely hand-made. Their jewellery was presented on a number of occasions at exhibitions and shows, where they received awards and distinctions, e.g. at the Gold Silver Time Jewellery and Watch Fair (2003), first prize for an evening jewellery set at Amberif (2004).

The Collection: The inspiration came from the Middle Ages characterised by a stiff, almost exaggerated cut, with a diversity of symbolic meanings. The haute couture dresses have been made of silk, chiffon and organza in the colours taken from the all-year colours of a garden: springtime snowdrops and cyclamens, summertime dahlias and autumn roses, complemented with old gold, brownish green and claret.

The collection is crowned with a wedding gown with a hand-painted motif of acorns, a Medieval symbol of fertility. Stylistically matching amber, natural gemstone and cubic zirconia jewellery set in silver tops it all.

This show targets women who value class and elegance.

6. CASHEBE

by Jola Słoma & Mirek Trymbulak and Image Silver

Jola Słoma & Mirek Trymbulak

A well-known and highly regarded designer duo from Gdynia. They are both closely tied to the Tri-City. Their adventure with fashion began in 1995, when they opened their Słoma Trymbulak Atelier. Jola Słoma & Mirek Trymbulak are the winners of many fashion awards. They extended their creative activity onto cuisine by publishing two books with recipes and adages for each day of the year: To Feed the Soul and To Dress the Soul, with the former also published in the United Kingdom. They have recently published a music album called Doosha Project. Słoma & Trymbulak are Buddhists, who apart from fashion also love harmony and peace. Their shows are known for their attention to even the most minute of details from hairstyles, through clothing to footwear.

Image Silver

Founded over ten years ago in Gdańsk, the company now ranks among the finest Polish amber jewellery companies. The secret of this success surely lies in the ever interesting and current designs by Piotr Szulta and Piotr Szymański. The company is a member of the International Amber Association. Amber is their passion, which never ceases to amaze and delight them.

The Collection: This year, the designers will surprise us with collection inspired by Pomerania, the Kaszubian region to be exact, which takes advantage of the distinctive graphic motifs of Kaszubian needlework. The embroidery motifs have become emblems on jackets, gowns and even tattoos on the models’ bodies. They have also become an inspiration for the silver and Baltic amber jewellery collection. We can expect an innovative approach to jewellery through its extension on the body. The designer duo decided to focus on the treasure-trove of inspiration around them which, filtered through their sensitive minds, yields surprising effects. The collection also includes specially designed and made footwear, inspired by the rich style the Kaszubian region, which shows, for instance, in the use of wooden soles. The tattoos and make-up is by Katarzyna Mątewska-Kowalewska.

Another surprise is the live music accompanying the show, which is a combination of traditional folk music and contemporary sound.

A true feast for the senses and the soul ...

7. mikroMEGA Delhi

by Michał Starost and S&A Amber Jewellery

Michał Starost

One of the best known Polish fashion designers with 17 personal collections and many fashion shows to his name in Poland and abroad. Winner of Baltic Sea Hi Fashion 2003 in haute couture. Michał began his fashion career in Sopot, opening his designer Atelier in 1998. He is the designer to the stars of Polish show business and is famous for his spectacular, often surprising fashion shows. He also designs day wear for customers who include BBC and CNN anchorwomen. In July this year, Michał will open his Atelier in Warsaw.

Studio Projektowe S&A Bursztynowa Biżuteria

The jewellery collection produces by the S&A Design Studio refers to matters which have recently ceased to be self-evident. It focuses on the need to wear jewellery at all, and amber jewellery in particular. Baltic amber is an important prop both in the spectacular stage form and in the accessories which discreetly, yet clearly complement the image. The mikroMEGA collection, through its ironic and mischievous interpretation of classic jewellery forms indicates new sources of inspiration for contemporary style.

All the jewellery pieces were made at Pstrągowski Studio Design, and they include ENERGIA, the unique necklace which won the Mercurius Gedanensis Grand Prix last year.

The Collection: The designers will put us in the mood of a wild carnival from New Delhi, in the style of One Thousand and One Nights with a flurry of tints and colours, clothes decorated with rhinestone and sequins; all of it glittering, glowing and dazzling. The clothes are made of silk, chiffon, tulle and the latest generation of synthetic fabrics, some of them especially brought from New Delhi. The footwear, inspired by Arabia and India, perversely rests on high stiletto heels. Małgorzata Sidorkiewicz, designed the headwear which tops it all off. Michał Starost is more than capable of putting on a spectacular show and we should be in for a lot of fun, complete with belly dancing on stage in worship to the body. One wishes the carnival would never end...

She works as a commentator and fashion show host on radio and television. Her showroom has been a fixture in Lublin for years.

Jolanta Szala’s motto is: “In order for a woman to feel like a woman, you need to create the necessary preconditions.”

Bożena Kamińska

Her pieces are characteristic in their incessant striving for perfection and care for customer satisfaction.

The Collection: Sensual femininity, mystery, glitter and elusiveness are the dominant features of this collection. The clothes and jewellery have been combined in such a way that they create a mix of refined gentleness. Spanish lace is juxtaposed with heavy silk jacquard, so that the differences are highlighted and the necessary preconditions for the highlighting of femininity – in every woman – are met. The jewellery features the finesse of openwork motifs drawing in its style on the textiles used. The material used to make the collection includes rock crystals, zirconias and diamonds. They are set in soft forms, reminiscent of a ring in their outline. All this is complemented by specially designed footwear. The evocative title, Stardust, promises a feast for the senses.

The Amber and Fashion Gala is a unique event for the lovers of beauty. Thanks to extraordinary designers’ ideas it lets us immerse for a moment in the world of perfection and uniqueness, but most of all of beauty and talent. Let me invite you all to the Grand Amber and Fashion Gala at Amberif 2007.

Emilia Korycka

– the author makes costumes for TV and music videos, writes features on fashion, creates graphic designs for firms. But she primarily designs only men’s fashion, which is her greatest passion. Probably due to her unremitting fascination with men.
